What is assertiveness?

Assertiveness is the quality of being self-assured and confident without being aggressive. In the field of psychology and psychotherapy, it is a skill that can be learned and a mode of communication. Assertiveness means much more than expressing ourselves and our points of view. It is an ability we must develop especially if you want to achieve effective business or social communications. Assertiveness is a complex of skills, behavior characteristics and body language knowledge.

It is essential for you to be assertive and speak your mind without being rude or aggressive. We will look at the differences between this in Sub-unit 4. Do not just say yes to others if you do not agree to what they are saying. Always remember, as an individual you have the right to express your views and opinions as long as you are confident and know what you are saying is relevant and makes sense. Assertiveness is a positive thing as long as you are aware of what needs to be spoken or discussed without hurting or insulting the other person(s) involved.
