Module 2 “Am I a leader?” – Leadership skills

Unit 1: What is leadership?
Leadership versus Management

In many cases leadership and management are considered as being the same position, with similar objectives and tasks to fulfil.

In your opinion, is there any difference between management and leadership? This question has been asked before and answered in different ways.

According to businesstrainingworks.com, the biggest difference between managers and leaders is the way they motivate the people who work or follow them. This being a very important aspect, it sets the tone for most other aspects of what they do. There are certain questions one should answer in order to see the differences which occur while leading or managing. In order to be successful, you should combine management and leadership. The questions which can help you in setting up your leading style are the following:

  • Where is your time being spent? Are you spending too much time on administrative, managerial stuff, rather than leading, developing your team?
  • Do you know your people? Do you know what they want? Do you know their strengths and weaknesses? Are you coaching them to get better?
  • Are you an innovator? Do you ask your team to be creative in finding solutions? Have you ever brainstormed with your team?
  • Are you delegating? Are you assigning tasks to your team?

Usually, the manager uses a formal, rational method whilst the leader uses passion and stirs emotions, managers have subordinates, while leaders have followers. Managers have a position of authority entrusted to them by the company they work for, their subordinates work for them, and most of the times do as they are told. On the other hand, leaders do not have subordinates, but followers. They should appeal to their followers, by using a charismatic attitude to attract people into the ways they believe that leads to their cause.

According to Peter Drucker, Leadership is doing the right things; management is doing things right. As a consequence, it can be said, that a manager brings many positive attributes to the new role of leader. There are some competencies that the manager must leave behind when assuming the leadership role.
